Workplace Investigations
There are two types of investigations that we recommend for the workplace. Informal and Formal. Below are two situations and recommended investigation types:
Alleged Discrimination, Harassment, or Bullying?
A formal investigation will provide specific answers as to what is taking place in the workplace so that the appropriate action can be taken.
Formal Investigation -
I learn what the details are of specific issues with the goal of ascertaining the truth so management can determine what action needs to be taken. Detailed information is provided to management.
Once I share the results with management, management can make a determination as to what, if any, corrective actions needs to take place with the individuals involved.
A formal investigation will help you to understand the truth as to what is taking place at your workplace

Informal Investigations-
Sometimes a manager/HR is not certain of the best approach to solve a problem so they bring me in to do an informal investigation. As an informal investigator, I speak with the people involved and obtain an understanding of what’s going on, how the people feel. I do not directly quote anyone, I just provide an overview to management. That makes it safer for people to communicate to me what is going on, what is bothering them.
Once I share the results with management, we discuss a plan to solve the issues. It can be a hybrid approach. Mediation with some people, training for others or training for all.
Sometimes the people are not the problem, the systems are the problem and what people really need is a change to the system.
An informal investigation prevents people from taking sides and making matters worse as frequently happens with a formal investigation. Instead of figuring out who is right or wrong, you can put your resources towards resolving the issues.
